Distances Australia - check out your travel time

Australia is a huge continent. The distances between the metropolitan areas can be extreme. Everything seems to be quite close together when you look at a map, but while travelling you get overwhelmed by the vast space of the country. From the west to the east, Down Under stretches out over 4000 kilometres and from the north the south it is including Tasmania about 3700 kilometres. If you in a hurry, it is recommended to fly the long distances in Australia and get a rental car locally. For the ones who like to discover the vastness by car is Down Under the perfect place.

I compiled a couple of indexes with distances and driving times between the major cities by using a travel planer of the Australian Automobile Club. The facts are just a rough guide; you also have to calculate time and kilometres for side trips. I guess you might have a look to some of the attraction along your way. Consider road closures and detours as well. These circumstances can cause an increase of you travel time. Also on gravel roads, sometimes the conditions of the bush tracks do not allow high speed travel. A good example is the trip between Cairns and Darwin. I compared the figures between the Savannah Way and the bitumen road via Mount Isa. Everything depends of course on the weather as well. When you have rain an d mud on gravel roads the figures below can be considered as useless. Plan your trip carefully and keep one or two days in reserve for an emergency.

Consider the distances as road kilometres. The figures in brackets are the estimated driving times in hours and minutes under perfect conditions for a passenger car. Facts and figures are carefully researched but there is no guarantee for the correctness of this information.

* Trips from and to Hobart: You have to add the time and distance for the ferry crossing from Devonport to Melbourne (or vice versa). The time table of the “Spirit of Tasmania” shows travel times between 9 and 10.5 hours. The distance between Melbourne and Devonport is 429 km.
