Australia is the only country in the world which covers a whole continent. Down Under has a size of nearly 7.7 square kilometres and is the sixth largest country on planet earth. Countries like Russia, Canada, the United States of America, China and Brazil are bigger than Australia. The population clock on the website of the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed 22 062 351 people on the 22nd of November 2009. |
That means less than 3 people per square kilometre in average. The reality is a little bit different, because most Australians live in the big cities along the coast. The Red Continent has huge Outback areas with no residential at all. Australia has six states and two territories. There are some islands in the Indian and Pacific Ocean which belong also to the country, as well as an area of the Antarctica. |
