Two heatwaves in 2009

In Adelaide you talk about a heatwave when the temperature gets up to 35 ºC or higher on 5 consecutive days. Or you have 3 consecutive days of 40 ºC or above.

The capital of South Australia experienced two heatwaves in 2009. The first one lasted for 9 days between the 26th of January and the 3rd of February 2009. The temperature went up to 45.7 ºC on Wednesday the 28th. The following night set a new record. The above mentioned hottest minimum temperature of 33.9 ºC was recorded.
The second heatwave was on for 8 days from the 8th until the 15th of November. The temperature dropped down on the 16th (31.9 ºC) and the 17th (29.0 ºC). But Wednesday the 18th brought Adelaide 38.9 ºC and on Thursday the 19th the thermometer reached the highest November temperature ever: 43.0 ºC.

Hottest New Years Day in 112 Years

Adelaide the 1st of January 2012 – The capital of South Australia had the hottest New Years Day in 112 years. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the temperature reached 41.6 degrees Celsius at 5.46pm local time. The highest recorded temperature for a New Years Day was in 1900 when the thermometer went up to 43.1 degrees Celsius.

So what do you do on such a hot day? I went with friends to IKEA (yes it was open!) for lunch and had a nice look around in the shop – air conditioned of course.
