Cycle Australia with the Extrawheel Trailer. The Extrawheel Trailer came originally with a plastic mudguard covered by some green canvas. A net was attached to the canvas so you could fit round dry bags into the net. My first cycle trip with the original trailer was in 2007. I cycled along the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia. That rough track left the plastic mudguard broken and the canvas rubbed through in some spots. But the handling was good and I like the idea of that extra wheel.

I discovered on the Extrawheel webpage that the design had changed so the trailer can hold standard panniers. My frame was still all right so I converted the trailer with a friend to make it suitable for standard panniers. It is basically the same system which is used by Extrawheel.

Great handling after modification

I was very excited how the trailer works after the modification. Now after my first cycle trip is all I can say that it is absolutely great and runs smoothly even on gravel roads. The system is fantastic, it is light and you can use standard 26” wheels. I carry always a spare tyre and tube for the bike, which you can use for the trailer as well because it is the same wheel size. And of course in emergency the wheel of the trailer can be used as a spare wheel for the bike as well. The Extrawheel Trailer is for me a clever solution which I don’t want to miss.

Spring steel for a great connection

When you look at the pictures you could think it all doesn’t really fit. But that is the system and I can confirm it really works. It is spring steel and there is some good tension on that joining piece. I never lost the trailer as far as today and I have been on really rough tracks.
